Glossary of Wine Terms

This is a manuscript of the 3rd edition, a work in progress sponsored by the US National Science Foundation. The first edition was published by Third Millenium Books, Novato, California, in and as noted below, copyright was reassigned to the author upon breakup of that company. As to conditions for use, Dr. Grosch says “make sure it’s as generous as possible. The only restriction I really want is, no alterations, or elisions which change [my] intentions. The only cautions for viewing, other than sheer size, are the presence of several tables, which browsers such as Lynx might not format correctly, and the fact that it contains a fair number of words in German, French, and other languages containing accented characters, coded in ISO Latin Alphabet 1, properly announced.

Indeed, what makes a great whisky event? But comfort, decadence, and camaraderie have evolved, for me at least, to be almost as important. I’m going to make the case that Matt Lurin’s Water of Life just might be the ultimate whisky event. I’m going to lay out my reasoning in detail and back it up with photos and descriptions of last year’s astonishing event and details of this year’s which continues a dramatic evolution towards whisky event greatness.

This event is going down May 18th and you’ll want to attend and pony up for one of the VIP ticket options and there are more than one. The usual answer is – to taste a widely among current offerings – learning a lot.

Acetic acid: The primary natural acid of vinegar. In trace amounts acetic acid can occur in wine without being considered a defect. But if present in large amounts, the wine is spoiled.

These formations may have resulted from carcass burial in an anoxic environment with minimal bacteria, thus slowing decomposition. Stromatolites Lower Proterozoic Stromatolites from Bolivia , South America Stromatolites are layered accretionary structures formed in shallow water by the trapping, binding and cementation of sedimentary grains by biofilms of microorganisms , especially cyanobacteria.

While older, Archean fossil remains are presumed to be colonies of cyanobacteria , younger that is, Proterozoic fossils may be primordial forms of the eukaryote chlorophytes that is, green algae. One genus of stromatolite very common in the geologic record is Collenia. The earliest stromatolite of confirmed microbial origin dates to 2.

The most widely supported explanation is that stromatolite builders fell victims to grazing creatures the Cambrian substrate revolution , implying that sufficiently complex organisms were common over 1 billion years ago. Factors such as the chemistry of the environment may have been responsible for changes.

Greek diacritics In the polytonic orthography traditionally used for ancient Greek, the stressed vowel of each word carries one of three accent marks: These signs were originally designed to mark different forms of the phonological pitch accent in Ancient Greek. By the time their use became conventional and obligatory in Greek writing, in late antiquity, pitch accent was evolving into a single stress accent , and thus the three signs have not corresponded to a phonological distinction in actual speech ever since.

In addition to the accent marks, every word-initial vowel must carry either of two so-called “breathing marks”:

Creationist Geologic Time Scale: Should the scientific community continue to fight rear-guard skirmishes with creationists, or insist that “young-earthers” defend their model in toto? Introduction This manuscript proposes a new approach for science’s battle against the rising influence in America of pseudo-science and the Creationist movement. The framework of Creationist Bible-based earth history, focusing on Genesis and the Noachian flood, can be assembled into a single geologic time scale Figure 1 , enlarged by addition of many geologic facts, difficult for Creationists to explain.

Figure 1 is an abbreviated version of the time scale outlined in the following paragraph which was redrawn and published by the American Scientist. Some of the items are so absurd that all but the most dedicated fundamentalists will see the overall picture as scientific nonsense, even bordering on humor, a most rare commodity in Creationist literature. Science, rather than using its traditional defensive approach of item-by-item rebuttal of Creationist attacks, needs to take the offensive by challenging Creationists to defend their “scientific” view of earth history as represented by this time scale.

Note that the numbered items in this Time Scale are further expanded in subsequent numbered sections which are keyed to these same numbers.

Most of the sequence in the railway cutting has not been seen since that time, except for limited exposures in adjacent old quarries. The new excavations for the Weymouth Relief Road have realed a substantial part of the sequence described by Fisher. The Purbeck sequences are shown in photographs on this webpage. Study of the new exposures has shown that Fisher’s work was very accurate and reliable.

After copies were pressed onto the paper, the paper entered the cabinet under the copier, where it dried on a large roller. An attachment was used to cut dried copies off the roll. Numerous companies produced roller copiers over a period of three decades. For example, Plate 11B shows a Rapid Duplicator that was advertised in Copies could be made more quickly with a roller copier than with a letter copying press. It was claimed that nearly papers could be copied in two minutes with a roller copier.

Roller copiers also competed with carbon paper. It was claimed that a roller copier could make a half dozen copies of a typewritten letter if the letter was run through the copier several times. It could make a dozen copies if the letter was written with a pen and good copying ink. Referring to roller copiers, Chas. Sweetland,Anti-Confusion Business Methods, , p. Rapid Roller Copier Plate 11B3. This machine was similar to roller copiers but copied onto loose-leaf paper.

Early history[ edit ] In Ancient Greece , Aristotle BCE observed that fossils of seashells in rocks resembled those found on beaches — he inferred that the fossils in rocks were formed by living animals, and he reasoned that the positions of land and sea had changed over long periods of time. Leonardo da Vinci — concurred with Aristotle’s interpretation that fossils represented the remains of ancient life.

Steno argued that rock layers or strata were laid down in succession, and that each represents a “slice” of time. He also formulated the law of superposition, which states that any given stratum is probably older than those above it and younger than those below it. While Steno’s principles were simple, applying them proved challenging.

Over the course of the 18th century geologists realized that: Sequences of strata often become eroded, distorted, tilted, or even inverted after deposition Strata laid down at the same time in different areas could have entirely different appearances The strata of any given area represented only part of Earth’s long history The Neptunist theories popular at this time expounded by Abraham Werner — in the late 18th century proposed that all rocks had precipitated out of a single enormous flood.

It has been said[ by whom? This theory, known as ” Plutonism", stood in contrast to the"Neptunist” flood-oriented theory. Formulation of geologic time scale[ edit ] The first serious attempts to formulate a geologic time scale that could be applied anywhere on Earth were made in the late 18th century. The most influential of those early attempts championed by Werner , among others divided the rocks of Earth’s crust into four types: Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, and Quaternary.

Exceptional fruit is minimally processed to create wines that are expressive, balanced and exciting. Initially, the distillery made small amounts of grappa, eau de vie and brandy. Though not quite on a par with the anti-slavery movement of the 19th century, temperance was a very significant morally based social movement in the U.S. and had its roots in the still pervasive damage done to some individuals and their families by the improper use of alcohol.

Ladies’ fashion in Regency-period Europe is the topic of the Annuaire des modes de Paris. Each of the twelve plates is dedicated to a different month of the year and its appropriate garments, and each plate is explained prior to an itemization of what articles of under- and outerwear, as well as the number of each, that a woman would need for the month. This is followed by listings of the shops where each article can be purchased.

The plates are unsigned engravings that have been very carefully hand colored. WorldCat locates only two U. Both catalogue their copies as having only eleven plates.

It was a detached s house in south-west London, with leaded lights, shutters and one of those big oak front doors with studs. When I think of my childhood, I remember it as being bright and warm. My mum was a health visitor and my dad an engineer, and there were always piles of paperwork and bits of machinery in the kitchen.

SHARE Although studying creativity is considered a legitimate scientific discipline nowadays, it is still a very young one. In the early s, a psychologist named J. Guilford was one of the first academic researchers who dared to conduct a study of creativity. He challenged research subjects to connect all nine dots using just four straight lines without lifting their pencils from the page. Today many people are familiar with this puzzle and its solution. In the s, however, very few were even aware of its existence, even though it had been around for almost a century.

If you have tried solving this puzzle, you can confirm that your first attempts usually involve sketching lines inside the imaginary square. The correct solution, however, requires you to draw lines that extend beyond the area defined by the dots. Only 20 percent managed to break out of the illusory confinement and continue their lines in the white space surrounding the dots.

The symmetry, the beautiful simplicity of the solution, and the fact that 80 percent of the participants were effectively blinded by the boundaries of the square led Guilford and the readers of his books to leap to the sweeping conclusion that creativity requires you to go outside the box.
